Netzwelt ( spelling netzwelt ) is a German-language web portal of the netzwelt GmbH of the same name , based in Hamburg . In April 2019, it reached 10.56 million visitors and around 29 million page views, making it one of the IT media with the highest reach in German-speaking countries at that time.

history

In the course of the emerging New Economy , Sascha and Dirk Hottes took over the news portal MP3 World in 1999 , which primarily dealt with MP3 players and audio software . The website was initially operated on a part-time basis by H2 Web GbR based in Darmstadt , as the two founders also have another professional activity. In addition to the latest news, the portal also included a forum .

In 2003 H 2 media factory GmbH was founded , which is also based in Darmstadt and took over the operation of the offer from H2 Web GbR . The company is initially setting up as a web agency and developing MP3 World in parallel. At this time, the domain netzwelt.de , which was acquired by the company, was up for sale. Then MP3 World was restarted under the name Netzwelt .

Netzwelt in its current form has been available without interruption since mid-December 2004. Initially, the focus was on software , gaming and DSL .

In September 2006, Akuma, a sister portal of Netzwelt, was launched, which is also operated by H 2 media factory GmbH and edited by the same editorial team. At the beginning, around 100,000 pieces of music were offered for a fee, which could be used as desired without DRM protection . In August 2007 Akuma was released from the beta phase and, with 10,000 registered users and 600,000 titles, was one of the largest music portals in Germany.

Due to the rapid growth of Akuma, whose music was also offered on Netzwelt, the operator of both offers relocated to Hamburg in mid-2008 . In July 2008, H 2 media factory GmbH for Netzwelt and Akuma was awarded the state winner in the GründerChampion 2008 competition organized by the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau .

In 2008, CatCap Kapitalanlagen GmbH & Co. KG and Tim Schumacher , co-founder and managing director of Sedo , also took part in Netzwelt. According to netzwelt and its own information, CatCap acted as an intermediary.

Due to the success of commercial download platforms, especially iTunes , Akuma was sold again in early 2010. Since then, the owner of the offer has been a Berlin web agency that has not developed it any further and has effectively discontinued it. After the sale, H 2 media factory GmbH changes its name to netzwelt GmbH in August 2011 .

At the end of February 2011, Netzwelt was the first German IT magazine to announce a specially optimized version for the Apple iPad . This was not implemented as a native app , but based on HTML5 and CSS3 , so that no installation is necessary and other tablet computers are supported in addition to the iPad . This magazine has since been discontinued with the 94th and final issue on July 12, 2013.

In the early years, Netzwelt concentrated primarily on news from the broad spectrum of information and communication technology. Since 2010, the portal has increasingly positioned itself as a guide for so-called consumer electronics . As a result, software , gaming and topics for professional users are increasingly taking a back seat, while mobile devices - especially smartphones and tablets - are now being dealt with more intensively. Netzwelt currently has a total of nine categories in which between 20 and 50 reports appear daily.

Daily news on Netzwelt is written by press agencies without material . The forum was discontinued at the end of 2015, and since then there has only been editorial content that it created itself. Netzwelt regularly publishes so-called arcade or casual games , mostly with the help of Adobe Flash .

Netzwelt also includes a virtual tariff calculator for DSL and electricity contracts. In addition, from April 2011 to September 2017, a separate channel was operated on YouTube under the name netzwelt tv , in which interviews, comments and test reports appear as videos on a regular basis.

criticism

Netzwelt was criticized for doing excessive search engine optimization compared to other IT portals . This made itself felt in leaps and bounds in the range in 2009, with the number of hits falling again shortly afterwards. In March 2010, the industry portal Meedia reported a jump in reach of 56.1 percent and speculated about possible SEO measures and targeted penalties by Google . The background was an indexing of own search results in Google.
