Gaming is a market town with 3021 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Scheibbs district in Lower Austria . The community is best known for the former Marienthron Charterhouse located here .

geography

Gaming is located in the Mostviertel at the western foot of the Ötscher in the Lower Austrian part of the Eisenwurzen . The area of ​​the market town covers 244.07 square kilometers. 85.87 percent of the area is forested.

Gaming was the largest municipality in Lower Austria in terms of area for a very long time , until a few years ago the municipality of Zwettl was allowed to add the Allentsteig military training area to its area. Since then, Gaming has been the second largest municipality in Lower Austria with an area of ​​244 km².

history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

In a major gaming was from 1330 to 1782 Carthusian - monastery , the Certosa gaming . The mystic and theologian Nikolaus Kempf also worked here . The International Theological Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family was housed in the Charterhouse until the summer of 2009 , which then moved to Trumau south of Vienna .

At least ten members of the IKG Ybbs / Amstetten from Gaming fell victim to the Shoah .
