Gresten is a market town with 1986 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Scheibbs district in Lower Austria in Eisenwurzen .

geography

Gresten is located in the south-eastern Mostviertel in Eisenwurzen in Lower Austria in the valley of the Kleine Erlauf, 25 km upstream from Wieselburg . The area of ​​the market town covers 3.84 km², 20.2% of the area is forested.

The municipality is surrounded by mountains of the Ybbstal Pre-Alps , which are 750 to 950 m high , but all of which are located in the municipality of Gresten-Land.

Neighboring communities

Gresten is almost entirely enclosed by Gresten Land . Only in the south does the market town border on Gaming .

history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province . The place was built around 1200 around today's parish church of St. Nicholas. In 1277 the place was first referred to as a market.

In 1924, the City of Vienna built a substation in Gresten , in which the electricity from the Opponitz power station and the Gaming water line power station (Lower Austria) and from the Partenstein storage power station (Upper Austria) were combined.

On April 19, 1945, 16 Hungarian-Jewish forced laborers were murdered in a moat by the Waffen SS.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 1,946 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1,889 inhabitants, in 1981 1,823 and in 1971 1,639 inhabitants.

There were 110 non-agricultural workplaces in 2001. 19 agricultural and forestry businesses according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at the place of residence was 888. In 2001, the activity rate was 47.32 percent.

  • Welser Profile : The market town has been an important industrial location since the Welser Profile company settled in 1972. The roll profiling plant, which has around 950 employees, was expanded to over 220,000 m² of operating space in the following years. Approx. 200,000 tons of steel are processed at the Gresten site every year.
  • In the center of the village, Spar and Billa operate grocery stores, and Bipa has a drugstore. Regional products can be found in an organic farm shop.

  • Railway: The terminus of the railway line (Wieselburg-Gresten) , which was a branch line of the Mariazellerbahn before the gauge change, is located in the municipality . Today the railway line is only used for goods traffic, passenger traffic was ended with the gauge changeover.
