The Ybbstal Pre-Alps are the group of the Ybbstal Alps in Lower Austria , upstream of the Lassing Alps , with smaller parts in Upper Austria and Styria . The mountainous region is the core area of the Lower Austrian Eisenwurzen .

Location and landscape

The Ybbstal Pre-Alps lie on the northern edge of the Alps, south of Amstetten , between the Upper Austrian Ennstal in the west and the central Erlauftal in the east. While further south, in the Lassingalpen, with Ötscher and Kräuterin, there are already high alpine stocks of the Kalkhochalpen , the foothills of the Alps are woody to alpine mountain ranges with a low mountain range , which reach summits between 1000 and 1500 meters, and only in the very west, towards the Gesäuse , with Gamsstein and Voralpe reach the 1800s mark and show more alpine summit corridors. The group culminates in the Hochkogel of the Gamssteinstock at 1774  m above sea level. A.

The area is criss-crossed by the valleys of the upper Ybbs , the Schwarzen Ois and the upper reaches of the Kleine Erlauf . On the northern edge there are two more towns: Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Scheibbs , and on the western edge Markt Weyer , the interior of the group is thinly populated with small structures.

On the concept of the Ybbstaler Voralpen

Inner Ybbstaler Voralpen, against the Ötscher

The term was coined by Hubert Trimmel for his mountain group classification for the Austrian cave directory from 1962, and defined within orographically defined boundaries. According to Trimmel, however, they are given as the Ybbstaler Alps . According to the recommendations of the Austrian Conference on Spatial Planning  (ÖROK), the Ybbstaler Voralpen area (definition 1991, as a touristic support area) comprises the southern municipalities of the Amstetten district including the statutory town of Waidhofen an der Ybbs .

The Voralm , the second highest floor of the group

According to Trimmel, in whose system they form subgroup number 1820, the Ybbstal Pre-Alps are:

According to ÖROK, the region has the number 045, and includes, from north to south, the Lower Austrian communities Sonntagberg , Waidhofen , Ybbsitz , Opponitz , St. Georgen and Hollenstein , which corresponds to the core area of the group after Trimmel, but a little further at Ybbsitz North reaches out.

Connect here: in the southeast Ötscher – Hochkar  (043), in the southwest Gesäuse – Salzatal  (124), in the west Mittleres Ennstal  (078).

Are classified as a subgroup the Ybbstaler foothills to the main group of Niederösterreichischen Limestone  (Trimmel no. 1800), the major unit Northern Limestone  (Nr. 1000). According to the Alpine Club division of the Eastern Alps  (AVE), they belong to the Ybbstal Alps , whose central section they represent. The Upper Austrian shares belong to the Enns and Steyrtal Pre-Alps spatial unit .

structure

The Ybbstaler Voralpen are divided by the upper valley of the Ybbs and its tributaries in the center, and the brooks to the Enns in the west, the east in the catchment area of the Erlauf ends in hilly hilly country. According to Trimmel, they are divided into the following subgroups (indicated with the outer boundaries of the group):

The state border between Upper and Lower Austria runs southwards over the watershed Enns – Ybbs, the one between Lower Austria and Styria from the Voralpe further eastwards, the border between Upper Austria and Styria to Altenmarkt, on the border of Gesäuse and the lower Ennsdurchbruchstal. The latter two countries make up only a small proportion of the group.

Nature and tourism

Map of Eisenwurzen

In the southeast of the group, in the Voralm – Gamsstein area, lies the nature park complex (Lower Austria) Eisenwurzen and Styrian Eisenwurzen .

The whole area is an easy hiking and mountain biking area, and with paths well developed, but as a pre-Alpine region an alpine “insider tip”. The Austrian long-distance hiking trails 04  Voralpenweg , 06  Mariazeller Weg and 08 Eisenwurzenweg lead through the whole group, 04 and 06 from Bischofberg to Waidhofen together, then the 04 runs east, the 06 runs south-east to Mariazell. The 08er crosses north-south, also via Waidhofen. With the Königsberg there is a small ski area.

Today the area is primarily presented to tourists under the term Eisenstraße , a network that stretches between Steyr, Wieselburg and Leoben and refers to the historic mining and early industrial metal processing region ( small iron industry ).
