Hubert Trimmel
Hubert Trimmel (born October 12, 1924 in Vienna ; † December 15, 2013 there ) was an Austrian karst and cave researcher . He was considered one of the leading karst and cave researchers in Austria.
Life
Trimmel was a founding member of the Association of Austrian Speleologists (VÖH). In the 1960s and 1970s he wrote standard works on caving (caving). He was involved in the exploration of numerous caves (such as the Dachstein Mammut Cave ) and was a member of the examination committee for the Austrian cave guide examination. For almost 50 years he was editor of the magazine Die Höhle , the members' newspaper of the Association of Austrian Cavers.
He was Secretary General from 1969 to 1993, then President of the International Union for Speleology (UIS) until 1997 . Trimmel was honorary president of the UIS and the Association of Austrian Speleologists and an honorary member of the Austrian Geographical Society .
Trimmel completed various studies with the titles Mag. Rer. nat. and Dr. phil. and was an associate professor .
Trimmel was involved in nature and environmental protection, most recently as Vice President of the Austrian Environment Association and Honorary President of the Austrian Committee of the International Alpine Protection Commission .
Hubert Trimmel had five children with his wife Erika.
Awards
- 1984 Silver Medal of Honor from the Province of Upper Austria
- 1984 “Goldener Höhlenbär” of the VÖH
- 1990 Cross of Honor for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria
- In 1996 Hubert Trimmel received the Dr. Benno Wolf Prize from the Association of German Cave and Karst Researchers.
- 1999 Golden doctoral degree from the University of Vienna
- 2003 Award "Naturschutz-Urgestein" from the Vienna Environment Association
- In 2007 he was the first winner of the Friedrich Simony World Heritage Prize of the UNESCO World Heritage Area Hallstatt - Dachstein - Salzkammergut .
