Like the previous year, 2013 was shaped by the aftermath of the Arab Spring . In Syria the civil war continued throughout the year; In Egypt , the elected President Mohammed Morsi was deposed by the military . In addition to Egypt, there were sustained public protests in Turkey , Thailand and Ukraine during the course of the year, especially in the second half of the year .
The NSA affair resulted from the revelations of the former employee of the US secret service NSA , Edward Snowden , which led to worldwide protests against the espionage measures of the United States.
In Europe (especially in the euro zone ) the year was shaped like the previous year by the euro crisis. Protests against the crisis policy of the European Union and against the policies of their own governments were particularly strong in the countries that were badly affected by the crisis, Greece , Spain , Portugal , Italy and Cyprus . Ireland , on the other hand, left the euro rescue package in December .
In February, for the first time since 1294 with Benedict XVI. a Pope back of his own accord. On March 13, for the first time in history, Francis was elected a Latin American bishop of Rome. He proclaimed a change of course towards a church that should be more there for the poor.
On September 22, 2013, the new Bundestag was elected in Germany . For the first time, the FDP could not overcome the 5 percent hurdle , which led to the end of the black-yellow coalition after four years . After almost three months, a grand coalition of CDU / CSU and SPD, still under Chancellor Angela Merkel , was formed.
