The cause of the fire disaster one at a performance of the band is Gurizada Fandangueira inflamed fireworks suspected. Sparks from a flare had probably set the insulating material of the ceiling of the event room on fire.

The Kiss nightclub is located in the center of the city on Rua dos Andradas 1955. The club's function room had a capacity of 2000 people. According to some Brazilian media, it was only designed for a maximum of 1000 people. According to police, around 900 people were in the nightclub at the time of the accident.

There was only one emergency exit next to the main entrance, and according to eyewitness reports, the security forces were overwhelmed with the situation. An attempt by a security guard to put out the fire is said to have failed because the fire extinguisher used did not work. The security guards did not open the main entrance until they were certain that the fire had broken out. Since it is customary in Brazil to only pay the entrance fee and drinks when leaving clubs and music bars, they feared that visitors might foot the bill. For the same reason, the only exit was also narrowed by iron roulette and bars. The narrowing of the two-meter-wide entrance and exit doors and the iron bars on the outside that made it difficult to escape have contributed to the tragedy. The security permit for the nightclub from the fire department of Santa Maria had expired in August 2012. Further investigations are still pending.
