Santa Maria (full name Santa Maria da Boca do Monte ) is a city in Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil .

It lies at 29 ° 41'03 south latitude and 53 ° 48'25 west longitude, up to about 151 meters above sea level . The population in 2019 was estimated at 282,123 people who live on a community area of ​​around 1781.6 km² and are called Santa-Marienser ( santa-marienses ). It is the fifth largest city of the state's 497 municipalities.

The biome is Mata Atlântica and Pampa , the climate is subtropical Cfa .

Santa Maria is about four hours by bus (i.e. 300 kilometers) from Porto Alegre in the geographic center of Rio Grande do Sul. Home to one of the largest public universities, the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (Ufsm) with more than 15,000 students, and one of the largest locations for the Brazilian Army and Air Force , Santa Maria is very much influenced by young people. In addition to the UFSM, there is also UNIFRA ( Centro Universitário Franciscano ) and a few other private faculties .

In January 2013, a serious fire occurred in a nightclub in Santa Maria, killing more than 230 people, especially students.

The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Maria . It has been headed by Archbishop Hélio Adelar Rubert since 2004 .
