Sydney Alvan Field (born December 19, 1935 in Hollywood , California , † November 17, 2013 in Beverly Hills , California) was an American non-fiction writer who dealt with the technique of writing screenplays.

Live and act

Syd Field taught screenwriting at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles in the 1980s . His students there included John Singleton and David S. Goyer .

Syd Field wrote books and lectured to help screenwriters write scripts of interest to the American film industry.

Field's scriptwriting concepts were also highly regarded by producers in Hollywood for creating concepts for successful Hollywood scripts.

Field's most important contribution to the topic was the division of a script into the "three-act structure" (referring to Aristotle ).

With this division of a script, a script begins in the first half hour with initial information about the characters and the background story. Then the plot of the film reaches a “ plot point ”, which gives the protagonist of the film a goal that he must achieve. Halfway through the film, the film's hero tries to achieve his goal, which Field also calls the "Confrontation Period". The last quarter of the film serves as the finale of the film, which ends with the conclusion of the film.

He died of hemolytic anemia in Beverly Hills in November 2013 at the age of 77.
