Execution of Peter Stumps
  • 1589 : The presumably mentally ill Peter Stump is found guilty by the judiciary in Bedburg of having committed at least 16 murders, rape and incest in the form of a werewolf . Furthermore, he is accused of magic and living with a "devil". A few days later he is wheeled and beheaded to death. After Stump, werewolves in the Rhineland are still called Stüpp today.

  • 1707 : The Hōei earthquake causes more than 5,000 deaths in Japan .
  • 1746 : Around 18,000 people are killed in an 8.4 magnitude earthquake in the Lima area of Peru. The port city of Callao is practically wiped out by the subsequent tsunami.
  • 1891 : The Mino Owari earthquake hits Japan . It is the second largest in the country's history to date, causing 7,273 deaths, 17,175 injuries and around 140,000 houses destroyed. Its strength is estimated at 8.0.
  • 1995 : A fully occupied Baku Metro train catches fire in a tunnel. 289 people die, 269 get away with injuries. It is the worst underground disaster in the world to date.
