- 1096 : After the able-bodied members of the People's Crusade in an attempted attack on the city of Nicaea in an ambush of the Seljuks are advised they flee in panic into their camp. There the Seljuks pursue a massacre ; only about 3,000 crusaders can escape to an abandoned castle.
