Emilio Arrieta
Emilio Arrieta (born October 21, 1823 in Puente la Reina ( Navarra ), † February 11, 1894 in Madrid ) was a Spanish composer.
Life
After the early death of his parents, he stayed with an older sister in Madrid and received his first musical instruction there. In the following years he lived alternately in Madrid and Milan , where he studied composition with Nicola Vaccai at the local conservatory . He first turned to opera composition , with which he was able to achieve some successes both in Spain and in Italy. In 1852 in Madrid he experienced the extraordinary success of the “great” Zarzuela Jugar con fuego by the composer Francisco Asenjo Barbieri and made the decision to turn to this genre as well. His career now took a very successful course. He was initially appointed as a teacher of composition at the Madrid Conservatory and in 1868 also took over its direction. The list of students in his composition classes includes many familiar names.
Arrieta was an extremely prolific composer; especially after he had turned to Zarzuela, he created several of these works every year, some of which are still part of the repertoire of Spanish theaters even after his death. Besides - and besides the operas from his early creative period - other compositions only have the character of occasional works. In all of this, the influence of his Italian education can be clearly heard, although he also incorporated elements of Spanish folk music in his stage works.
