Ruperto Chapí y Lorente

Ruperto Chapí y Lorente (born March 27, 1851 in Villena , Alicante province , † March 25, 1909 in Madrid ) was a Spanish composer .

At the age of seven he began taking flute and clarinet lessons . He later played cornet in his town's wind orchestra. He conducted the Banda Municipal de Alicante when he was 15 years old. At the age of 16 he went to study at the Conservatory in Madrid, where he studied harmony with Miguel Galiana and composition with Emilio Arrieta . After that he was first conductor of a wind orchestra for an artillery regiment . Then he studied in Paris at the Conservatory . A few years later he went to Rome to complete his musical training.

In 1878 he returned to Spain. Although his first Zarzuela was written in 1867, he celebrated great success with this special form of incidental music in Spain after his return from Rome . As a result, one or two Zarzuelas of his appeared annually, which brought him great fame. His oeuvre also includes operas , orchestral works , wind orchestra works and chamber music .
