- 1977 : On Tenerife , Tenerife North Airport , the occurred devastating plane crash of civil aviation , as a jumbo jet of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is racing when starting in dense fog in a second Jumbo rolling on the runway to the start position and no more time can turn after the other pilot accelerates too early to takeoff due to a communication problem. Of the 644 people on board both machines, 583 people die, only 61 can save themselves or be saved.
- 1980 : The Norwegian drilling platform Alexander L. Kielland collapses in the Ekofisk oil field in the North Sea and capsizes. 123 of the 212 crew members are killed.
