The Tallapoosa River [ tæləˈpuːsə ˈɹɪvəɹ ] is a river that originates at the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia , and flows south and west into the state of Alabama . There it flows together with the Coosa River to form the Alabama River . It is retained on its course by a number of dams named Harris, Martin, Yates and Thurlow (from north to south). They are owned by Alabama Power , which uses them to generate electricity. Lake Martin Reservoir (north of Martin Dam) is particularly large and is visited for numerous recreational purposes, particularly in the Auburn, Alabama area . Some environmentalists believe the dams' changes to the natural course of the river will have a negative impact on fish and animals in the area.
