Pietro Berra

Pietro Berra (* 1879 in Vercelli , Vercelli province in the Piedmont region ; † March 6, 1976 in Como , Lombardy ) was an Italian composer and conductor .

He received his first musical training at the Istituto Musicale in Vercelli . In 1901 he was already the conductor of the Filarmonica in Castellamonte . From 1904 to 1908 he conducted the Musica Municipale in Domodossola . After this period his activities in the field of composition began. His first opera was successfully premiered in 1912 at the Teatro Civico Vercelli. From 1913 to 1918 he moved to Como as a conductor , where he led the Filarmonica Cittadina Alessandro Volta wind orchestra . From 1919 to 1931 he conducted the Musica Cittadina wind orchestra in Chiasso , Canton Ticino, Switzerland . From 1931 to 1959 he was the conductor of the Civica Filarmonica wind orchestra in Mendrisio , in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. He was particularly successful with the Mendrisio brass band at the 20th Federal Music Festival in Lucerne (1935), at the 21st Federal Music Festival in St. Gallen (1948) and at the 22nd Federal Music Festival in Freiburg im Üechtland (1953). The archive of this orchestra contains 55 marching compositions by Pietro Berra, of which Alpini , Inaugirazione , La Ticinese and Ritorno glorioso are the best known.
