Foundation and Middle Ages

The fact that Mendrisio was settled at the time of the Celts and Romans is confirmed by a plaque for Publius Valerius Dromone in the old bell tower. Mendrisio is mentioned for the first time as Mendrici in 793 , probably a genitive of Mendricus or Manricus , the name of a leader of a Longobard tribe.

In the Middle Ages , Mendrisio with its three castles belonged to the area of influence of the city of Como . In 1335 Mendrisio became part of the State of Milan together with Como.

15th to 16th century

In 1433 the Duke of Milan Filippo Maria Visconti gave the village of Mendrisio to the Sanseverino family, who left the place in 1485. Mendrisio came under the direct control of the Duke of Milan. In 1499 the Mendrisiotto was occupied by the French, after 1517 it was conquered by the Swiss.

18th to 20th century

traffic

Mendrisio is on the Lugano - Como railway line and is the starting point of the Mendrisio – Stabio - Varese railway , which went into operation in 2018.

In the first half of the 1990s, Ticino and especially Mendrisiotto suffered from the global economic crisis. In this situation, the large-scale “VEL-1 Mendrisio” trial was a welcome boost to the economy. Between 1994 and 2001, 400 electric vehicles were sold to private customers and 80 charging stations were set up. Their use was monitored and researched over several years.

The use of electric vehicles was demonstrated in the large-scale test in Mendrisio. The VEL2 project followed in the canton of Ticino from 2001–2004. This also aimed to make the population aware of energy-efficient vehicles. The aim is to lower energy consumption or reduce CO 2 emissions. The follow-up project to the large-scale test was intended to bridge the gap to VEL3 (2005–2013), which provides for a self-supporting, neutral bonus penalty. Through the large-scale test, Mendrisio created an international name for itself as a competence center for electric vehicles. See also electric mobility in Switzerland .
