Salorino is a village and district in the municipality of Mendrisio in the Mendrisio district of the Swiss canton of Ticino . Until April 4, 2004 Salorino was a municipality.

geography

Salorino is in a panoramic position above Mendrisio on the Moree torrent on the slopes of Monte Generoso . The hamlets Somazzo and Cragno belong to the locality .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1287 under the then name Selorino . The village is attested in 1330 with Somazzo as a neighborhood and belonged to the Mendrisio region. The village after Balerna , from which it separated in 1601, was part of a church.

economy

In the past, beekeeping, agriculture and forestry dominated the economy. In addition, there was seasonal emigration, especially of construction workers. Up until the beginning of the 21st century there was a quarry and a hat factory in the community, but they closed their doors in 2000 and 2005 respectively.
