history

In 865 the village and the neighboring Castel San Pietro formed a concilium (neighborhood). In the 12th century clerical tithe lords (decimani) and the monastery of Sant'Abbondio in Como had basic rights in Balerna. The community, first mentioned in 1115 as Barerna , consists of the settlements Caslaccio, Mercole, Sant'Antonio, Bisio, Pontegana and Passeggiata. In the 13th century Balerna was initially dependent on the city of Como (Quartier Porta Sala), later on that of the bishop. With Como, Balerna came under the rule of the Milanese Visconti in 1335, followed by Franchino Rusca .

The Milanese were followed in 1512 by the Confederates, who united it with Mendrisio to form a bailiwick in which Balerna could maintain its repeatedly confirmed privileges. Until 1573 the Vogt had a court in Balerna, to which Balerna two plebani and Mendrisio two reggenti. In 1798 Balerna was supposed to be added to the Cisalpine Republic , but in a vote Balerna voted to remain with Switzerland. In the decree of Aarau of May 30, 1798, Balerna was attached to the Helvetic Republic together with Mendrisio .

  • The complex of the Collegiate Church of San Vittore dates from the 17th century, but its apses probably date from the 13th century; it contains frescoes attributed to Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli called Morazzone ; the facade dates from 1709 according to a plan by Agostino Silva; the church tower was built in 1658–1661.
  • Church of San Giovanni Battista e della Vergine
  • Villa vescovile called Belvedere
  • Archpriest house and old nunziatura; the episcopal palace was built by Bishop Francesco Bonesana († 1709) according to the plan of Carlo Silva.
  • Ruins of Pontegana Castle in Castellazzo near Pontegana, of which traces of a tower still stand. The castle, which is said to date back to the Gauls, was probably restored around 1350 by Bonifazio Quadri, the bishop of Como; it still existed in 1403.
