Giuseppe Martinola

Giuseppe Martinola (born September 7, 1908 in Mendrisio ; † July 27, 1990 ibid) was a Swiss archivist , high school teacher , historian , publicist and researcher in the fields of culture, art history and politics.

Life

Giuseppe Martinola was born as the son of Antonio Martinola from Mendrisio. After studying in Mendrisio and Lugano , he attended the history faculty at La Sapienza University in Rome and received his doctorate with a thesis on the history of the Risorgimento . From 1938 to 1951 he was the Ticino state archivist, then head of the secondary school in Mendrisio (1951–1954); between 1954 and 1973 he worked as a high school teacher in Lugano.

From 1942 to 1990 Martinola was editor of the Bollettino storico della Svizzera italiana and from 1956 to 1975 a member and head of the cantonal monument commission. He researched the political events in the canton of Ticino during the first decades of its independence in the 19th century and was interested in the important personalities of that time such as Vincenzo Dalberti , Giovan Battista Quadri and Stefano Franscini .

He wrote about the emigration of craftsmen, wrote monographs on artists of the 19th century, made inventories of Ticino art monuments and organized exhibitions of contemporary art.
