Novazzano is a municipality in the Stabio district , in the Mendrisio district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.
geography
The village is 346 m above sea level. M. on the border with Italy , 6 km south of the Mendrisio station on the Bellinzona - Lugano - Chiasso line of the Gotthard Railway . The municipality includes the fractions Brusata , Gaggio , Boscherina , Casate , Canova , Castel di Sotto and Pobia . Neighboring communities are Balerna , Bizzarone (IT-CO), Chiasso, Coldrerio , Mendrisio, Ronago (IT-CO) and Uggiate-Trevano (IT-CO).
history
The village was already inhabited during the Etruscan and Roman times. It was first mentioned in 875 as Nepotiano after a noble family called "De Novezano". The Bishop of Como had basic rights here, which were granted by Heinrich III in 1043 and 1055 . (HRR) have been confirmed. Novazzano was assigned to the County of Seprio in 1170.
