history

Aerial photo (1946)

The village was already inhabited in Roman times. Its name is derived from the Latin word for stable stabulum . Excavations in the area of San Pietro show a settlement continuity from approx. 400 BC to the 7th century. The burials from the Iron Age are followed by a burial ground and stately settlement structures from Roman times, traces of the Mercury cult and numerous Longobard graves. In 1999 the rich grave goods of a Longobard warrior were discovered.

In 1181 the Orelli family of Locarno ceded the tithe rights in the region to the Bishop of Como . In 1275 the Benedictine abbeys of Sant'Abbondio in Como and Sant'Ambrogio in Milan owned goods and rights in Stabio. Ecclesiastically, Stabio belonged to the Vicariate of Mendrisio, from which it separated before 1575.

On October 22, 1876, there were serious riots between conservatives and liberals in Stabio, which claimed three lives (the so-called Stabio shooting ) and led to federal intervention.

In September 1943, many Italian refugees came across the Gaggiology border in Switzerland.

The Japanese beetle was discovered in Stabio in October 2019 . With the aim of preventing its spread, an export ban was issued for soil and plant parts from the affected area.

traffic

Stabio is on the cantonal road 394 from Mendrisio to Malnate . An expressway leads from the entrance to Stabio to the Mendrisio-Süd motorway junction.

The railway line from Mendrisio via Stabio to Malnate was shut down in 1928. Today the community is connected to the public transport network by a bus service. In 2014 the new S-Bahn line from Mendrisio to Stabio, the construction of which began in 2009, was opened - in January 2018 to Varese.

economy

In the 19th century the silk spinning and later the tobacco industry developed. The first factory was the Realini shirt factory, founded in 1902, which was taken over by the Ermenegildo Zegna group in 1976 (around 900 employees in 2005). The thermal springs discovered around 1850 led to the establishment of some baths; their water was still being used for therapeutic purposes at the beginning of the 21st century. Since the 1960s, the community has experienced an industrial boom in the food, mechanical engineering, textiles and clothing, as well as electric and hybrid vehicles, sectors.
