S30 at Magadino

The S-Bahn in Ticino (it .: Rete celere del Canton Ticino ) has been in operation since 2004. The line network comprises three standard-gauge lines operated by the Italian - Swiss railway company TILO (Treni Regionali Ticino Lombardia), as well as the narrow-gauge line operated by the private Ferrovia Lugano-Ponte Tresa (FLP) from Lugano to Ponte Tresa. Two cross-border routes lead to Lombardy .

Since 2018, the network has been more closely linked to the Trenord S-Bahn network in Lombardy . Therefore, the Ticino routes were renumbered in 2009 from S1 to S10, S2 to S20, etc. The core elements are the cross-border S10 line from Biasca to Milan and the new route to Varese in Italy. The numbers S40 and S50 have been reserved for the routes between Lugano and Milan-Malpensa Airport .

The Castione-Arbedo train station (north of Bellinzona) was rebuilt in 2008/2009 and has served as the terminus for the S20 and S30 since 2010, relieving the network center Bellinzona.

Route to Varese

To expand the network, a 17 km long railway line from Mendrisio to Varese is currently being built (FMV, F errovia M endrisio– V arese). The project consists of three parts: expansion of industrial track Mendrisio-Stabio , cross-border new line Stabio-Arcisate and expansion of FS -distance Arcisate-Varese . The costs were estimated at CHF 134 million plus EUR 203 million; commissioning was planned for 2014 in the Italian-Swiss state treaty signed in 2008. The work on the Swiss side was completed in October 2014, at a cost of CHF 186 million. On the Italian side, the construction of two railway tunnels and a lowered route through the towns of Arcisate and Induno Olona began in 2009. Arsenic was discovered in the excavated material of the two tunnels in April 2011 . Since then, work on the Italian side has been suspended and the start-up date has been postponed more and more. In August 2015 one speaks of completion at the end of 2017. Therefore, on December 14, 2014 only the section from Mendrisio to Stabio was put into operation. The new line S 40 ran from Stabio to Mendrisio. Until the completion of the entire route, however, only trips between 5 and 8 a.m. and between 4 and 7 p.m. were offered instead of a 30-minute cycle. The entire route was opened on January 7, 2018. Since then it has been served by the S 40 Albate-Camerlata - Varese and S 50 Bellinzona - Varese lines together every 30 minutes.
