S-Bahn in Switzerland

A Zentralbahn class ABe 130 multiple unit on the line near Ennethorw, which was expanded to double track in 2006 .

The Lucerne S-Bahn was opened in the first phase on December 12, 2004 and is part of the Central Switzerland S-Bahn project , which also includes the Zug urban railway .

Since Lucerne has a terminus station, but - unlike in the Zurich area, for example - no significant investments have been made in the infrastructure, the Lucerne S-Bahn consists of former regional train lines that have been slightly adapted in recent years. Accordingly, there are no real diameter lines , the S1 runs continuously between Baar and Sursee , but has a longer stay due to the change of direction in Lucerne. The standard-lane access road (built in 1897) to Lucerne train station is very busy, which makes it impossible to set up inner-city stops on this section. Outside this bottleneck, some new stations have been opened. The focus of investments in the next few years will be placed on the double-lane expansion of the meter-lane access to Lucerne train station.

Lines

The Lucerne S-Bahn network includes the following 14 lines:

Only Stadler Flirt of Stadtbahn Zug operate on the S1 . Between Sursee and Rotkreuz, the S1 trains run every half hour, in the area of the Zug Stadtbahn between Rotkreuz and Baar a quarter of an hour can be offered. The S1 is the only cross-city line of the Lucerne S-Bahn, until December 2015 the route between Sursee and Lucerne was assigned the line number S18.
Multiple unit type Stadler Flirt of the Stadtbahn Zug on the S1 in Rotkreuz station
There is a half-hourly service between Lucerne and Stans, and every second train continues to Wolfenschiessen. The trains are run with ZB ABe 130 (Stadler Spatz) or ZB ABeh 160/161 (Stadler Fink). On the Stans – Wolfenschiessen section, the Luzern-Engelberg-Express supplements the offer at 30-minute intervals. The Niederrickenbach station is not served by the S4.
Accelerated trains only during peak hours, mostly with ZB ABeh 160/161 (Fink).

  • S 55 : Lucerne - Hergiswil - Alpnach Dorf - Sarnen - Sachseln Accelerated trains only during peak hours
Accelerated trains only during peak hours, mostly with ZB ABeh 160/161 (Fink).
Run as wing trains with BLS RABe 525 (Nina) and BLS RABe 535 (Lötschberger)
  • S 77 : Lucerne - Littau - Malters - Wolhusen - Menznau - Willisau
Additional commuter connections in the morning and evening during peak hours, since December 15, 2019.
  • S 7 : Lucerne - Wolhusen - Willisau (- Huttwil - Langenthal)
Wing train with RE Luzern– Bern , runs to Langenthal at peak times. Run with BLS RABe 525 (Nina).
  • S 29 : Sursee - Zofingen - Olten - Aarau - Turgi. The S8 was renamed the S29 and linked to the S29 of the Aargau S-Bahn. There is no need to change trains in Olten in the direction of Aarau and Brugg.
Trains of the types Stadler Flirt and SBB RBDe 4/4 (NPZ Domino) are used. The S8 ran to Lucerne until December 2008, since then you have to change to the S1 (until December 2015: S18) for a trip to Lucerne in Sursee.
This line is operated by SBB RABe 520 (Stadler GTW) and runs every half hour from Monday to Saturday until 8 p.m., otherwise every hour. Between Lucerne and Hochdorf there is a half-hourly service every weekday between 6 a.m. and midnight. In the opposite direction from 7 a.m. to midnight. On working days even from 5 or 5.30 a.m.
  • S 99 : Lucerne - Hochdorf
New line since December 2016, only runs during peak hours. Similar to the S9, SBB RABe 520 (GTW) operate on this line.
Remarks

Lines S 4 , S 44 , S 5 and S 55 are narrow-gauge ( meter gauge ) and are operated by the Zentralbahn , the other lines are standard-gauge . The S 31 and S 32 are operated by the Südostbahn ; the S 6 , S 77 and S 7 from BLS AG , the rest from SBB .

The route network has been supplemented by the Lucerne - Flüelen - Altdorf ( Tellbus ) express bus line along the southern shore of Lake Lucerne since 2006 , which has cut the travel time between Lucerne and Altdorf in half compared to the trains running via Arth-Goldau. The Tellbus is operated by Auto AG Uri in cooperation with the Lucerne transport company. Since December 2015, the PostBus line 310 (Winkelriedbus) has been running between Stans and Altdorf according to the same principle during rush hour.

The number range is shared with the Zug Stadtbahn - the S2 line only runs between Arth-Goldau and Erstfeld in the Lucerne S-Bahn area.

Remarkable

  • In a first draft of the line network around 2002 it was planned to run the S3 from Lucerne via Arth-Goldau to Rothenthurm. The route could be driven in less than an hour.
  • The following stops have been built since the Lucerne S-Bahn was introduced in 2004: Buchrain , Längenbold (renamed Root D4 in December 2007 ), Kriens Mattenhof (2004), Meggen Zentrum (2007), Luzern Verkehrshaus (2007), Emmenbrücke Gersag, Baldegg Monastery, Hochdorf Schönau, Wolhusen Weid, Sarnen Nord (2016). There are also the stops of the Zug Stadtbahn between Rotkreuz and Baar.

Wing concept Emmental / Lucerne hinterland

Since December 12, 2010 the S6 has been operated according to the wing system. From Lucerne two coupled trains run to Wolhusen. They are separated in Wolhusen. One part of the train goes to Langnau im Emmental, the other to Huttwil and Langenthal. On the way back, both trains will be reunited in Wolhusen and will continue together to Lucerne. The line has been operated by BLS AG alone since then, until then SBB was involved and SBB NPZ and BLS NPZ were used. Now the BLS multiple units with automatic couplings are deployed to enable the trains to be disconnected and coupled quickly in Wolhusen. Initially these were the Stadler-Rail GTW 2/8 , since their sale to the SBB, three-part NINAs and Lötschberger have been used.

Lowering the Zentralbahn

Old line of the Zentralbahn in Lucerne with a narrow-gauge multiple unit on the S5, 2009

In December 2008 work began on laying the central railway line between Lucerne station and Kriens Mattenhof , on which the S4 and S5 lines operated, underground. The underground route consists of two tunnels , the mined broken Hubelmatttunnel and the in -cover method resulting Allmend tunnel . The underground stop Lucerne Allmend was also built in the Allmend tunnel, which opens up the Swissporarena and the exhibition grounds as well as parts of the Obergrund-Allmend and Sternmatt-Hochrüti districts. The new line went into operation on November 12, 2012, and the Allmend stop was operated for the first time when the timetable changed on December 9, 2012. Due to adjustments to the track systems in the area of the Lucerne station entrance, the S4 S4 trains stopped only in the direction of Dallenwil and the S5 trains only in the direction of Lucerne in the first year of the timetable. Since the timetable change in December 2013, both lines have been serving the stop every half hour in both directions; the shifting of the cycle creates a 15-minute cycle between Lucerne and Hergiswil.

By lowering the Zentralbahn, the above-ground route was no longer required and the track systems were dismantled. The section between Lucerne Steghof and Kriens Mattenhof has been used as a pedestrian and cycle path since December 2016 ; the lighting attached to the overhead contact line is reminiscent of the former railway line.

Further plans and ideas

Resumption of passenger traffic Sursee - Triengen

A study was published on the resumption of passenger traffic on the Sursee-Triengen-Bahn (ST), which was discontinued in 1971 . The route is still there, it is used by SBB Cargo and for nostalgic steam train journeys. Construction work would only be necessary within the Sursee train station. Either an hourly extension of the S1 Lucerne - Sursee would be planned, or the hairpin of the 43 minutes waiting in Sursee composition of the S8 from Olten , to Triengen; also the establishment of a S-Bahn station Sursee Industrie. However, a prerequisite would be considerable investments in the ST, in particular its electrification. The majority of the affected communities have spoken out against such rail transport.

Pulse compression Lucerne - Horw

The 15-minute intervals between Lucerne and Hergiswil are to be increased by the new S41 Lucerne – Horw . The line, which is only operated during rush hour, will run every half hour, resulting in a 7.5-minute cycle. Commissioning of the line is planned for 2021, until then the line will be continuously expanded to double lanes.

Extension S61 to Willisau

The S61 (new S77) ( Luzern - Schachen LU ) is to be extended to Willisau until 2025 . For technical reasons, the line has to run faster and will probably only stop in Littau , Malters and Wolhusen . The implementation will start in December 2019.
