On November 23, 1912, Sursee became a railway junction when the standard-gauge Sursee-Triengen railway to Triengen was opened. However, passenger traffic on this route was discontinued in 1971; the route is still used by museum trains and freight trains from SBB Cargo . A reactivation is up for discussion. The station experienced a milestone with the introduction of the Lucerne S-Bahn and Bahn 2000 . The number of train connections was increased, and the station was given a third track in 2006. Reception building and facility

Sursee train station

The reception building is relatively simple and has been supplemented with annex buildings over the past few decades, which with their red and gray facades contrast with the white walls of the main building. The station itself has three tracks, and in the station area and the adjacent industrial facilities there are several sidings for various companies located there, such as Fenaco . Track 1 is on the side platform with the station building, tracks 2 and 3 form a central platform, with track 3 only being in operation since 2006. Tracks 1 and 3 are used for through traffic from Zofingen to Lucerne, while track 2 is used for trains ending in Sursee and is also occupied by the S-Bahn from Olten and Lucerne, which have been broken in Sursee since 2008 for reasons of schedule.

future

The reactivation of the passenger traffic of the Sursee – Triengen-Bahn is being considered, a feasibility study is examining the integration of the line into the Lucerne S-Bahn network, either as an extension of the S1 or the S29, whereby the latter would require a hairpin at Sursee station, the S29 but has a longer idle time in the station than the S1. For this step, renovation work on the track system would have to be carried out in the Sursee train station.

A new bus station is to be built by 2021, and the station square is to be redesigned and upgraded. A new location for “Park and Ride”, “Kiss and Ride” and for taxis is also planned. The station square is also to be closed to through traffic. In the medium term, the pedestrian underpass is also to be expanded. In the long term, a fourth track is to be built and a third pedestrian underpass is to be built in the Haselwartweg area (south of the train station). It is not yet known when construction work on the new bus station will begin.
