The station Zofingen is the station of Zofingen in the canton of Aargau , that of the Swiss Federal Railways is operated. It lies on the Olten - Lucerne railway and is the western end of the Zofingen – Wettingen railway . In addition, the Olten – Bern railway line and the new Mattstetten – Rothrist line are connected with a connecting curve in the northern neighboring community of Oftringen . The station building of the station opened in 1856 is a cultural asset of regional importance and is a listed building.

business

Hourly operate Interregio trains on the route Basel - Olten -Zofingen- Sursee - Lucerne , alternating with hourly trains running InterRegios of Bern about Zofingen to Lucerne. The offer on the main route is supplemented by RegioExpress trains between Olten and Lucerne. Regional traffic with stops at all train stations is handled by the S8 (Olten – Sursee) line of the Lucerne S-Bahn . The S28 of the Aargau S-Bahn runs on the branch line Zofingen - Suhr - Lenzburg .

Zofingen train station is an important hub for regional bus transport operated by the Limmat Bus company. Nine bus routes connect the city and neighboring communities. They lead to Aarburg , Brittnau , Murgenthal , Rothrist , Richenthal , Schöftland , St. Urban and Vordemwald . The cycle times are 15 to 60 minutes, line 11 to the cemetery only runs sporadically.

The following lines are in operation:

history

When the Swiss Central Railway (SCB) planned its main network from 1852, Zofingen actively campaigned for the city to become the junction of the north-south and east-west main lines. For the connection between Zurich and Bern, the city authorities suggested a route from Olten via Zofingen and Vordemwald to Langenthal . But the SCB decided on the direct route from Olten via Murgenthal along the Aare ; instead of Zofingen, Olten became the central hub . The SCB opened the Aarau – Olten – Zofingen– Emmenbrücke line on June 9, 1856; the extensions to Basel and Lucerne followed in 1858 and 1859.

The train station in 1856

Around twenty years later, Zofingen still had the opportunity to become a railway junction. The Swiss National Railway (SNB) was planning a “Volksbahn” from Lake Constance to Lake Geneva to compete with the “Herrenbahnen” SCB and NOB . The Zofingen – Wettingen line was opened on September 6, 1877. Another stage was planned from Zofingen via Langenthal and Utzenstorf to Lyss . But that never happened, as the SNB went bankrupt in February 1878.

In 1902, the SBB took over all SCB lines and a few years later began to upgrade the main lines to double lanes. The Zofingen– Reiden section was dual -lane from December 1, 1909, the Zofingen– Aarburg - Oftringen section from May 1, 1911. The Olten – Zofingen – Lucerne line was electrified on February 23, 1924. The former national railway line took place electrification on July 15, 1946, initially to Suhr – Aarau, and on December 17, 1946 to Lenzburg.

Bus platform between the train station and the main post office

The biggest disadvantage of the Zofingen train station has always been the lack of a direct connection to Bern. Long-distance traffic had to be changed in Olten, which resulted in quite a detour. After the outbreak of the Second World War , an approximately 600 meter long connecting curve between the Olten – Lucerne and Olten – Bern lines was built in Oftringen from February to September 1940. In the event of the Olten train station being destroyed , it should be able to be put into operation quickly. The single-track "war loop" was never used in this form because there was a buffer stop at the western end and the existing switch had not been tied. The Bahn 2000 concept included direct express trains from Bern via Zofingen to Lucerne, for which the “war loop” had to be reactivated. Construction work began in September 2003 and with the timetable change on December 12, 2004, the new connection could be put into operation.
