Vordemwald ( Swiss German : ˈfɔrəˌʋɑʊd ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Zofingen district and is located in the Pfaffneren valley .

geography

The community is located in the valley of the Pfaffneren , which flows from south to north and flows into the Aare at Rothrist . More than half of the community area is forested. The Unterwald in the west and the Boowald in the southwest are part of the largest contiguous forest area in the canton of Aargau. The valley and the hills to the south-east and north have been cleared over the centuries . There are individual hamlets around the village center, Rümlisberg in the north, Benzligen in the southeast and Chratzeren in the south.

The area of the municipality is 1014 hectares , of which 584 hectares are forested and 81 hectares are built over. The highest point is in the Boowald at 550 meters, the lowest at 414 meters on the Pfaffneren. Neighboring communities are Rothrist in the north, Strengelbach in the east, Brittnau in the southeast and Murgenthal in the west.

history

In the 9th and 10th centuries, the population around Zofingen rose sharply and expanded westward over the Wigger into the jungle . Eight plug-in yards were built on the newly cleared hills . The Steckhöfe known as "Waldviertel" grew steadily. Its residents lived largely autonomously and hardly cared about the overriding state. The first written mention of the settlements "vor dem Walde" was in 1306 in the Habsburg land register . In the Middle Ages, the area around Vordemwald was part of the Aarburg office and therefore owned by the Counts of Frohburg . They sold the office to the Habsburgs in 1299 , who thus had both lower jurisdiction and blood jurisdiction . The Frohburger had already sold the property to the Canons of Zofingen around 1200 .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. The area now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the Bernese Aargau . In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation . In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . The part of the Aarburg office located west of the Wigger initially belonged to the Langenthal district in the canton of Bern and then in March 1803 became part of the canton of Aargau. On August 17, 1803, a community meeting took place for the first time and the Steckhöfe merged under the new name Vordemwald. The community remained agricultural until well into the 20th century, and the population growth was below average compared to the rest of the district.

Vordemwald was one of the venues for the 1999 Fistball World Cup .

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "Green fir torn in white, with a red V below." The community seals of 1811 and 1872 showed a torn fir tree with the letters G and W for "community forest". The letters were later left out, as they often gave rise to mocking remarks ("greatness delusion"). To avoid confusion with similar fir coats of arms, the capital V for Vordemwald was added in 1962.
