history

Zofingen education center

In 1962, a motion was submitted to the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau calling for the creation of a canton school in Zofingen to relieve the existing locations in Aarau and Baden . The canton authorities supported the project and the city of Zofingen made the area of the Spitalhof available. In addition to the canton school, an industrial and a commercial vocational school, another primary school and a branch of the Aarau teacher training college were to be built in Zofingen. In order to be able to decentralize high school education in Aargau, a change in the law was necessary, which was adopted in 1968 by the Aargau voters.

Since the Aarau Cantonal School had meanwhile exceeded its capacity limits, the Zofingen Cantonal School was provisionally founded in Olten in the Canton of Solothurn in 1973 . In 1974, those eligible to vote in Zofingen approved an investment loan of CHF 28 million. It was the highest amount that the city had used for a project until then. In 1975 the teachers' seminar started operating in temporary barracks, followed by the opening of the BZZ in April 1976. The seminar was later converted into a higher educational institution (HPL). In 1998 the Aargau government council wanted to close the HPL for reasons of economy, but then refrained from doing so after strong political opposition. Since 2006, teacher training has been integrated into the Northwestern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (FHNW). In August 2013, the FHNW Zofingen location was closed and primary school teacher training was relocated to the new campus in Brugg-Windisch.
