Strengelbach ( Swiss German : ˈʃtræŋʊˌbɑχ ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Zofingen district and is located in the Wiggertal .
geography
The elongated village is located on the western edge of the Wigger plain and forms an almost completely closed settlement area with the neighboring district capital of Zofingen . In the far south is the «Dörfli», the old village center. The new center further north emerged from a scattered settlement . In the east the Wigger and the Autobahn form the border. The plain is limited by a steep flank up to the Wissberg ( 503 m above sea level ) and the Ramooswald in the north and the Dörfliwald in the south. The west side of these elevations, however, slopes gently towards the valley of the Pfaffneren .
The area of the municipality is 603 hectares , of which 268 hectares are forested and 144 hectares are built over. The highest point is in the Dörfliwald at 530 meters, the lowest at 419 meters on the Wigger. Neighboring communities are Rothrist in the northwest, Oftringen in the northeast, Zofingen in the east, Brittnau in the south and Vordemwald in the west.
history
It is believed that the first settlements arose in the 8th or 9th century in the area of today's «Dörfli». Later settlers settled outside this community in a scattered settlement. It was first mentioned in a document in 1263. The place name comes from the Old High German Strangilbah , which means "stream with many tributaries". Strengelbach was part of the Aarburg office , which was owned by the Counts of Frohburg . They sold it to the Habsburgs in 1299 , who thus had both lower jurisdiction and blood jurisdiction . In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. The area around Strengelbach now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Berner Aargau . In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation .
In the 16th and 17th centuries the importance of the scattered settlement grew. It was given the designation “outer community” (in contrast to the “inner community”, the Dörfli). In 1759, the Bernese authorities obliged the two communities to share administration and accounting. Dörfli's corporate rights were exempt from these obligations. They are still managed today by the Strengelbach village cooperative . The corporation owns 73 ha of its own forest, its own water supply and 14 ha of agricultural land. Not to be confused with this is the local community . Their estates include 102 hectares of forest. The entire forest property is on the territory of the municipalities of Rothrist and Murgenthal .
The first school house is occupied for the year 1737. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . The part of the Aarburg office located west of the Wigger initially belonged to the canton of Bern (Langenthal district) and in March 1803 became part of the canton of Aargau. In addition to agriculture, home work was also important for Zofing textile companies from the 18th century . In the 1840s, a knitting factory as well as a yarn and cotton cloth printing factory were established, the latter still in existence today. There were three furniture factories in the 20th century. Gradually Strengelbach geared itself economically to Zofingen.

coat of arms
The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In yellow blue diagonal left river." The coat of arms itself first appeared on the municipal seal in 1811. For a long time, however, there was uncertainty about the color scheme. There is also a variant with a white river in red. However, this coat of arms was very similar to the coat of arms of the neighboring municipality of Brittnau, so that in 1960 they finally agreed on the blue river in yellow.
