Kirchleerau (in the local dialect Chilchlerb [ˈχɪlχːˌleːrb] ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the district of Zofingen and is located in the central Suhrental .

geography

The village on the eastern edge of the Suhrental does not actually have a center, but is a scattered settlement , the individual districts of which are loosely connected to one another. The settlement lies in a side valley and is separated from the actual Suhrental by an average 20 meter high side moraine . The moraine was created during the Würme Ice Age when the Reuss Glacier retreated . The development has grown together with that of Moosleerau . The almost two kilometer long side valley is bordered by steep hills. the Rossrücke ( 713  m above sea level ) in the south, the Nack ( 612  m above sea level ) in the north and the castle ( 649  m above sea level ) in the northeast. In front of the Rossrücke is the elliptical Ättebüel ( 601  m above sea level ). The extensive Rötler plateau extends along the eastern border of the municipality, at the transition to the Ruedertal , between the Rossrücke and the castle.

The area of the municipality is 436 hectares , of which 218 hectares are forested and 43 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 713 meters on the Rossrücke, the lowest at 483 meters on the north-western boundary of the municipality. Neighboring communities are Schlossrued in the north, Schmiedrued in the east, Moosleerau in the south and Staffelbach in the west.

history

Finds of bricks and wall remnants indicate that the area was already inhabited by the Romans . The first documented mention of Lerowe can be traced back to 1248, the name Kylchleren first appeared in 1306 in the Habsburg land register . The name comes from the Old High German lewirouwo, which means "in the land of graves near the water". In the Middle Ages, the village was under the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg , later the Counts of Kyburg . After these died out, the Habsburgs took over sovereignty and blood jurisdiction in 1273 .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Kirchleerau now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Berner Aargau . From the 15th century the village was part of the Rued rule, a judicial district within the Lenzburg office . The owners of the rulership exercised the lower jurisdiction and were the main landowners. After various noble families from the surrounding area had owned the estate, it was acquired in 1520 by the Lords of May, who originally came from Italy . Their residence was the Rued Castle in neighboring Ruedertal . In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation .

In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then, Kirchleerau has belonged to the canton of Aargau. It was not until 1834 that the May sold their last remaining rights to the canton. Agriculture shaped the life of the community well into the 20th century . Since the early 1960s, the population has increased by more than half due to increased building activity.

The oldest surviving residential building is the Untervogtei, built in 1663 in a transition style between Gothic and Baroque .

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In blue on a green floor, left-facing white church with a red roof." The coat of arms appeared for the first time on the choir arch of the church, which was expanded in 1595, and showed a lark next to the church building. In order to simplify the coat of arms, the municipal council decided in 1949 to omit the lark.
