Staffelbach ( Swiss German : ˈʃtɑfʊˌbɑχ ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the district of Zofingen and is located in the central Suhrental . The village of Wittwil was incorporated in 1901.

geography

The community area extends over the entire width of the Suhrental, the village itself is located on the western side of the valley on the foothills of an average thirty meter high terminal moraine . This was created during the Würme Ice Age when the Reuss Glacier retreated and extends across the entire plain. The Suhre makes its way through a narrow passage. The village of Wittwil is about a kilometer north .

In the northeast rises the Ebni ( 607  m above sea level ), a hill that separates the Suhrental from the Ruedertal . In the west, towards the Uerkental , there are several hills that are relatively steep in the lower area and merge into smaller plateaus in the upper area. From north to south these are the Schwarzhuserebni ( 615  m above sea level ), the Sattelebni ( 635  m above sea level ), the Chalt ( 670  m above sea level ) and the Altrüti ( 680  m above sea level ).

The area of the municipality is 893 hectares , of which 354 hectares are forested and 65 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 680 meters on the summit of the Altrüti, the lowest at 462 meters on the Suhre. Neighboring communities are Schöftland in the north, Schlossrued in the northeast, Kirchleerau in the east, Moosleerau in the southeast, Reitnau in the south, Wiliberg in the southwest, Bottenwil in the west and Uerkheim in the northwest.

history

During various excavations, remains of Roman buildings have been discovered. The Alemanni settled in the area in the 7th or 8th century. The first mention was made on July 15, 1220. At that time, the provost of handed pin Schönenwerd the monastery of St. Urban six estates in Staphelbach . The place name comes from the Old High German Staffalbah and means "stream at the terrain level". In the Middle Ages the village was under the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg , from 1173 on that of the Counts of Kyburg . After these died out, the Habsburgs took over sovereignty and blood jurisdiction in 1273 .

On the Schlosshübel south of the village there was a small castle, which was proven by the Aargau canton archeology during a geoprospection in 2019 . The complex, probably dating from the 13th century, was provided with a circular wall and had a tower and other wooden outbuildings. Without written communication, no connections can be made with the former builders of the castle; it is assumed that it could have belonged to the von Reinach gentlemen .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Staffelbach now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Berner Aargau . The village was assigned to the judicial district of Kölliken in the Lenzburg district. The landowners included the monasteries of Allerheiligen and St. Urban, the Zofingen Monastery , Lenzburg Castle and various nobles. In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation . A department store was built next to the existing mill in 1592, making the village the center of the regional grain trade. In 1656, Bern approved the holding of annual fairs . Due to fierce opposition from the cities of Aarau , Brugg , Lenzburg and Zofingen , this privilege was lost a year later.

In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then Staffelbach has belonged to the canton of Aargau. From 1766 to 1905 there was a brickworks, from 1873 to 1900 a branch of the Bally shoe factory . In 1900, the Great Council decreed the incorporation of Wittwil , which was carried out the following year. Agriculture shaped the life of the community well into the 20th century . From 1900 to 1980 the population shrank by over a quarter. Since then, however, there has been a slight increase again.

In the center of the village is the tithe house built in 1592, a striking three-story building with a gable roof and two arched gates, which used to be used to store grain.

The Friedlistall sandstone quarry south of Staffelbach (also known as “sandstone caves”) is a witness to the former sandstone mining. As early as the 16th and 17th centuries, the sandstone known as “Staffelbach marble” was well known throughout Aargau and the surrounding regions. At the beginning of the 20th century, sandstone mining fell sharply. The memory of this is kept alive by the sandstone museum.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In blue over two white waves, black grooved bridge, raised by a six-pointed white star." The coat of arms, first seen on the municipal seal in 1811, shows the bridge over the Suhre. The star comes from the old coat of arms of the incorporated village of Wittwil. For a long time there was disagreement about the shape and color of the star, until in 1951, in consultation with the State Archives , the municipal council decided on a six-pointed white star.
