The population grew from 1574-1816 more than fourfold. This was followed by a slight population decline until 1837 and a brief period of stagnation from 1837-1850. The rural exodus also affected Knutwil and led to a large emigration from 1850–1920 (1850–1920: −31.2%). The number of residents was lower in 1920 than in 1798. There was a slight increase from 1930–1950 (1930–1950: + 8.8%). The population has grown rapidly since 1960 (1960–2004: +64.3%). The proximity to the regional center of Sursee and the A2 motorway were the two most important elements for this population surge.

languages

The population uses a highly Alemannic dialect as their everyday language. In the last census in 2000, 97.16% said German, 0.88% Serbo-Croatian and 0.38% French as their main language.

Religions - denominations

The entire population used to be members of the Roman Catholic Church. Today the religious situation is as follows. There are 81.55% Roman Catholic, 8.78% Evangelical Reformed and 0.88% Orthodox Christians. In addition, there are 3.10% non-denominational, 1.58% Muslim and 0.57% followers of other non-Christian religions. The Muslims are of Albanian, Turkish, Kurdish and Bosniak origin. The followers of other non-Christian religions are Hindus of Tamil origin (as of 2000).

The Catholic parish of Knutwil belongs to the dean's office Sursee of the Roman Catholic regional church of the canton of Lucerne, which in turn belongs to the diocese region of St. Viktor of the diocese of Basel . The parish church of St. Bartholomew is in Knutwil, and a chapel in St. Erhard.

The Reformed Knutwils belong to the Sursee parish, which belongs to the Reformed Church of the Canton of Lucerne . The church in Sursee is about five kilometers southeast of Knutwil.

history

Aerial photo (1953)

Stilt houses from the Neolithic Age, burial mounds from the Hallstatt period and Roman coins found in the ground indicate that the community was settled by people very early on. Gnuthwilare was first mentioned in an exchange document in 1050. The previous owner of the settlement, Count Eberhard VI. von Nellenburg , gives Knutwil to the Allerheiligen monastery in Schaffhausen and receives two Württemberg villages from Count Vollmar von Frohburg . The lower rights were exercised by the Frohburgers until 1280. Count Hartmann von Frohburg sells them to Markwart von Ifenthal, who donates them to the Zofingen Canons in the same year . The Habsburgs exercise high jurisdiction . In 1407 the city of Lucerne took over the rule. In 1579, as a result of an exchange of land between the Canton of Bern and St. Urban Monastery, the lower jurisdiction also passed to Lucerne. This is created by the District Bailiwick of Knutwil, which also comprised today's municipality of Mauensee. It existed until 1798. For the next five years Knutwil belonged to the Sursee district, then from 1803 to the newly created Sursee Office .

Mauensee, view towards St. Erhard

There is a stop called St. Erhard-Knutwil on the Lucerne – Olten railway line . But this is between Mauensee and the district of St. Erhard - far from Knutwil. The Büron-Bad Knutwil station is on the Sursee-Triengen-Bahn . Regular passenger traffic ended here around 1971. Most of the community is accessible during the day by the Sursee-Buchs-Uffikon bus line. In the evening and at night there is an on- call bus called Publicar .

St. Erhard is on the Sursee-Dagmersellen road; Knutwil on side streets to Büron, Triengen and (St. Erhard-) Sursee. The next motorway connection to the A2 in Sursee is 9 km away.
