history

Aerial photo (1959)

The area was populated early on. Neolithic pile dwellings , remains of Roman buildings and a Roman bronze tripod found near Iflikon bear witness to this .

Notewile was first mentioned historically in the land register of the Einsiedeln monastery in 1217/22. First a noble family, the Lords of Nottwil, ruled the community on behalf of the Lords of Gösgen in what is now the Canton of Solothurn . Soon afterwards, the Lords of Tannenfels took over the office of the Meier on behalf of the Beromünster monastery . Until 1798 the community was part of the Eiamt, which was part of the Michelsamt . In 1348 Catarina von Wessenberg, the widow of Burkhard II von Sursee and Tannenfels, sold her rights to the Teutonic Knights . Because the order took sides with the Habsburgs , Tannenfels Castle was destroyed by the Lucerne people in 1386. As part of the Michelsamt, the municipality came under the rule of the city of Lucerne in 1415 . In 1799 she took part in the short-term uprising against the new French masters, the so-called Beetle War. From 1798 to 1803 it belonged to the Sempach district, since then to the Sursee office .

Nottwil has been twinned with the German city of Schwaigern ( Baden-Württemberg ) since 2009 .
