Eich is a municipality in the Sursee constituency in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland .

geography

The community is located on the east bank of the Sempachersee between Sempach and Sursee. Since the construction of the "Eich" motorway tunnel, the village has been divided into two parts: the lower village by the lake and the upper village by the church. The Dorfbach flows through the village . At the northern boundary of the municipality, the Brandbach flows from the Eichwald north of the hamlet of Oberhundgelle ( 714  m above sea level , 1.6 km northeast of the village) via the hamlet of Brand ( 711  m above sea level ; 1.6 km in north from the village) towards Schenkon . The hamlet of Buechmatt ( 548  m above sea level ) lies on the municipal border with Schenkon , and the hamlet of Voremwald ( 699  m above sea level ; 1.8 km north-northwest of the village) is on the slope above . The largest district outside the two-part village is Vogelsang ( 695  m above sea level ), a separate quarter further up on the slope; 1.3 km from the village center by the lake.

The municipal area is 922 ha - without the share of Lake Sempach, however, only 589 ha. 67.9% of the land area is used for agriculture, 19.5% is forest and wood and only 12.6% is settlement area.

Despite the charming scenic location on Lake Sempach and on a sunny slope, the population shrank significantly until 1900 (1850–1900: -21.2%). After that, the population fluctuated between 470 and 520 people until 1970. Since then, it has been growing continuously because of the good access to traffic from the motorway and the beautiful location (1970–2004: +176.4%).

The population speaks a highly Alemannic dialect. In the 2000 census, 97.69% gave German, 0.48% French and 0.40% English as their main / everyday language.

Religions - denominations

The population is traditionally Catholic. On the occasion of the last census, the following denominational picture emerged: 75.24% Roman Catholic, 15.21% Protestant Reformed and 0.48% Christian Catholic. There were also 6.29% non-denominational and 0.48% Muslim (as of 2000).

Origin - nationality

At the end of 2014, of the 1,707 inhabitants, 1,596 were Swiss and 111 (= 6.5%) were foreigners. The population consisted of 93.5% Swiss citizens. At the end of 2014, the foreign residents came from Germany (49.5%), Italy (12.6%), Portugal (6.3%), Spain (2.7%), Serbia including Kosovo (0.9%) and the Turkey (0.9%). 22.5% came from the rest of Europe and 4.5 % came from outside Europe.

The area has been inhabited for thousands of years. At the Sempachersee stood around 1,700 BC. A bank settlement. Finds from the Hallstatt period , from Roman and Alemannic times also prove the permanent settlement.

The community is mentioned for the first time under the name Heiche in the letter of protection of the German King Heinrich III. as property of the Canons of Beromünster on January 23, 1045. It was nominally administered by Sempach under the rule of the Habsburgs . The local priest exercised the de facto rule over Twing and Bann. In 1415, Eich came under the rule of the city of Lucerne and became part of the Michelsamt . During the Peasants' War the Eicher besieged the city ​​of Sempach . From 1798 to 1803 it belonged to the Sempach district, since then to the then newly created Sursee office .

The community is not on any railway line, but has good access to the public transport network thanks to the Sempach-Neuenkirch-Sursee post bus line .

Eich is located on the Sempach – Sursee road, the right bank road along the Sempachersee. A tunnel on the A2 motorway crosses the municipality. The closest motorway connections are Sempach 3 km and Sursee 8 km away.
