history

Aerial photo (1958)

An Iron Age furnace was discovered at Soppensee . The districts of Dorf and Luternau were settled by Alemanni in the 7th and 8th centuries. Ulrich I. von Lenzburg bequeathed part of the church set to the Beromünster Abbey in 1036 . The barons of Wolhusen sold the upper jurisdiction to the Habsburgs around 1290 . On the night of December 25, 1375 there was a clash of 600 Swiss Confederates and 3,000 Guglers , which the former won. Hence a hamlet bears the name Guglern . After the battle of Sempach , the place came from Wolhusen to the Ruswil bailiff. While the upper jurisdiction lay near Lucerne , the lower jurisdiction often changed hands. In 1348 the Lords of Sursee-Tannenfels sold them to the Teutonic Knights, first to those of Sumiswald , and later of Hitzkirch . In 1678 the Lords von Sonnenberg acquired it and ceded it in 1779 to the Pfyffer von Altishofen , whose eldest from then on called himself Pfyffer-Feer von Buttisholz. There were two big village fires. The first occurred in 1563 and the second, on August 16, 1861, practically the entire village was destroyed with 42 houses burned down. The village was then rebuilt in the late classicist style on behalf of the Lucerne government. The community has belonged to the newly founded Sursee Office since 1803.
