Oberkirch is located at the northwest end of Lake Sempach on the Suhre and has merged with the city of Sursee to the north . population

Population development
year Residents
1850 1,141
1900 935
1910 933
1941 1,016
1950 1,166
1970 1,612
1980 1,866
1990 2,311
2000 2,661
2004 2,970
2019 4,796

The population fell sharply throughout the 19th century, from 1850 to 1900 alone by −18.1%. The reason lies in the migration of the rural population to the industrial centers. After stagnation in the first decade of the 20th century, the population grew to around 1,000 people. It remained at this mark until 1941. After that, the population continued to grow. As a result, the population today is three times larger than in 1941 (1941–2007: +230.5%). Since Oberkirch has grown together with the municipality of Sursee in the north , it benefits from its proximity to this regional center.

languages

The population uses a highly Alemannic dialect as their everyday language. In the last census in 2000, 92.71% said German, 1.58% Serbo-Croatian and 1.43% Albanian as their main language.

Religions - denominations

In the past, all residents were members of the Roman Catholic Church. This has changed as a result of leaving the church and immigration from other regions in Switzerland and abroad. Today (as of 2000) the religious composition of the population is as follows. There are 82.15% Roman Catholic, 8.38% Evangelical Reformed and 2.22% Orthodox Christians. In addition, there are 2.78% non-denominational and 1.58% Muslim.

Origin - nationality

At the end of 2014, of the 4,062 inhabitants, 3,590 were Swiss and 472 (= 11.6%) were foreigners. The population consisted of 88.4% Swiss citizens. At the end of 2014, the foreign residents came from Germany (21.8%), Serbia including Kosovo (21.6%), Italy (12.3%), Portugal (12.1%), Turkey (2.1%) and Spain (0.8%). 20.1% came from the rest of Europe and 9.1 % came from outside Europe.

history

The area around the Sempachersee was settled very early. This is evidenced by finds from the Stone Age to the Romans. An Alemannic burial ground indicates that Oberkirch must have been settled in the early Middle Ages. Historically, Oberkirch was first mentioned in a deed of donation from Count Ulrich I von Lenzburg to the Canons of Beromünster in 1036 under its Latin name ecclesia superior . A German spelling of the place name, Oberenkilchun , appears in 1217. The area belonged to the domain of the Lenzburg and later the Habsburgs . After they lost the battle of Sempach , the city of Lucerne took over rule. The western part of today's municipality belonged to the Landvogtei Ruswil until 1798, the eastern part with the village of Eiamt , which was part of the Michelsamt . From 1798 to 1803 it belonged to the Sursee district, then to the newly established Sursee Office .

Oberkirch is on the Lucerne – Olten railway line and has its own stop, but only the S1 stops . In addition, the Sursee / Bahnhof – Wolhusen / Spital bus line runs through the community - so it is easily accessible by public transport. Oberkirch is on the Lucerne – Sursee and Lucerne – Zofingen roads. The next motorway junction in Sursee on the A2 is only 3 km away.

However, the bus route is currently being rescheduled. The Wohlhusen-Sursee bus is supposed to go over the Burg district (which is on Hauptstrasse 2 ). In order to keep the village developed, a new bus line Oberkirch-Sursee Bahnhof is to be built.
