population

Population development
year Residents
1798 829
1850 1,060
1900 853
1920 859
1941 1,100
1960 1,146
1980 1'425
1990 1,593
2000 2,017
2004 2,017

From 1798 to 1850 the number of residents grew (1798–1850: + 27.9%). Subsequently, a large emigration movement towards industrial centers began by 1900 (1850–1900: −19.5%). The next two decades brought stagnation in the population. This was followed by a period of strong population growth from 1920 to 1941, which was followed by a standstill in the 1940s and 1950s. Since 1960 the number of inhabitants has risen massively (1960–2004: +76.0%), particularly strongly in the 1990s. It has not grown since then. The location in a valley basin, which, due to its location and altitude, receives a lot of sunshine and little fog, as well as the proximity to the regional center of Sursee and the motorway, have certainly contributed to the growth from 1960 to 2000.

languages

The population uses a highly Alemannic dialect as their everyday language. At the last census in 2000, 92.32% said German, 3.52% Albanian and 1.39% Portuguese were the main languages.

Religions - denominations

In the past, all residents were members of the Roman Catholic Church. This has changed as a result of leaving the church and immigration from other regions in Switzerland and abroad. Today (as of 2000) the religious composition of the population is as follows. There are 75.81% Roman Catholic, 9.82% Evangelical Reformed and 0.89% Orthodox Christians. There are also 6.69% Muslims and 2.73% non-denominational.

Origin - nationality

At the end of 2014, of the 3,110 inhabitants, 2,554 were Swiss and 556 (= 17.9%) were foreigners. The population consisted of 82.1% Swiss citizens. At the end of 2014, the foreign residents came from Serbia including Kosovo (26.1%), Germany (22.3%), Portugal (16.0%), Italy (7.9%), Turkey (2.9%) and Spain (1.4%). 15.5% came from the rest of Europe and 7.9 % came from outside Europe.

history

Coins and building remains from Roman times and an Alemannic burial ground indicate early settlement. Richenbach is mentioned for the first time in a dispute settlement document between the Canons of Beromünster and a citizen from Zofingen from 1210 . In the 13th and 14th centuries the community belonged to the nobles von Reinach , who left the administration to others. On September 15, 1464, Hans Erhart von Reinach sold the place to the city of Lucerne , which the municipality assigned to the Michelsamt for administration. From 1798 to 1803 it belonged to the Münster district, then to the newly created Sursee Office .
