Since the municipality has only existed in its current size since 1844, there are no exact population figures from the period before 1850. From 1850 to 1910, a massive wave of emigration to the industrial centers led to a severe population loss (1850–1910: −38.0%). After that, despite two periods of population standstill , it rose again significantly until 1980 (1910–1980: +28.3%). This growth has increased since then - so that the number of residents is around 600 today.

languages

The population uses a highly Alemannic dialect as colloquial language. At the last census in 2000, 95.24% said German, 3.00% Albanian and 0.53% French were the main languages.

Religions - denominations

In earlier times all residents were members of the Roman Catholic Church. Today (as of 2000) there are 85.89% Roman Catholic and 4.41% Evangelical Reformed Christians. In addition, there are 3.70% non-religious and 3.17% Muslim (Albanians).

Origin - nationality

At the end of 2014, 723 of the 792 inhabitants were Swiss and 69 (= 8.7%) foreigners. The population consisted of 91.3% Swiss citizens. At the end of 2014, the foreign residents came from Germany (50.7%), Serbia including Kosovo (21.7%), Portugal (1.4%) and Spain (1.4%). 23.2% came from the rest of Europe and 1.4 % came from outside Europe.

history

The place was already settled in Roman times, as the remains of a Roman building prove. The municipality was first mentioned as Slierbach in 1178. The place belonged to the Büron lordship. This in turn belonged to the county of Willisau and thus until 1407 to the sphere of influence of the Habsburgs . That year, the city of Lucerne acquired the county of Willisau. After Lucerne had also acquired lower jurisdiction from Hemmann von Rüsseegg in 1455, Schlierbach was part of the Büron-Triengen bailiff until 1798. From 1798 to 1803 the districts Schlierbach and Etzelwil belonged to the district Sursee, while the district Wetzwil was assigned to the district Beromünster. Since then, all districts are in the then newly created Sursee Office . The community was only created in its current size in 1844 by merging the towns of Schlierbach, Etzelwil and Wetzwil.
