Former airport

There are ferry connections to the mainland to Bodø and to the Lofoten towns of Røst and Moskenes near Sørvågen .

There is a daily helicopter connection to Bodø, the former airport, however, was abandoned due to low occupancy and poor weather conditions; previously there had been several, sometimes fatal, crashes after take-offs or landings from the airport. In the former tower building, a small artisanal praline production was based. However, it was closed after a fire a few years ago.

tourism

With the falling profitability of fishing, tourism has become more important for the residents. The main tourist attractions include the old eagle traps and the oldest church in Lofoten.

One campsite on the island is now closed.

Trivia

In the children's book Latte Igel travels to Lofoten by Sebastian Lybeck (1969), Værøy is the seat of the predatory eagle Groff, to whom the three heroes of the story must travel to free the elf Kirivi from the eagle's captivity.
