Andøy is a municipality in the Norwegian province of Nordland . It includes the island of Andøya and part of the island of Hinnøya .
Half of the population lives in the Andenes administrative center. Although Andøy is further north than Murmansk , the Gulf Stream has a comparatively mild climate and fewer frost days than Oslo. The midnight sun shines from May 19th to July 25th.
The highest point in the municipality is the Skrivartind on Hinnøy with 890 moh. The municipality has a shoreline of 231 km. Bleikstrand is a 2.5 km long sandy beach.
The Bleik district was probably the only place in Norway that remained free of ice during the last Ice Age. The lead moraines are the oldest in the country. There are also remains of a settlement from 1400 BC near Bø. In addition, two farms from the early Iron Age and one from the Middle Ages have been excavated.
Andøy also has three moor areas as nature reserves. It is the largest cloudberry area in Norway.
The Andøya Rakettskytefelt rocket launch site has been in operation since 1962.
