Hadsel is a municipality in the Norwegian province of Nordland . Of the municipality's 566 km², 551 km² are land.
The municipality is made up of the four islands of Hadseløya , Hinnøya , Langøya and Austvågøya , which belong to the Vesterålen .
The administrative center of the municipality is the place Stokmarknes with about 3200 inhabitants (2007). Stokmarknes was promoted to town in 2000. The city is located on Hadseløya Island, which is home to around 70% of the municipality's total population.

Home of the Hurtigrute
Stokmarknes is considered to be the founding place of the Hurtigrute : in 1881 the Vesterålen Steamship Company was founded here as the predecessor of today's Hurigruten Company by Richard With . The Hurtigruten ship Finnmarken , built in 1956 and now decommissioned, is located in the city right next to the Hurtigruten Museum .
