history
Settlement since the Iron Age can be proven archaeologically . The Tjøtta estate in the municipality was home to Øyvind Skaldespiller , the last significant skald in Norway. Hårek von Tjøtta took over the farm, which together with the seat of Torolv Kveldulvssons , Sandnes Gård, was the power center of Hålogaland in the 10th century and during the Middle Ages. Tjøtta Manor, one of the largest in Northern Norway, became church property in 1350, became a crown property after the Reformation and in 1632 came into the possession of the bailiff of Helgeland Peter Jakobsson Falck and his descendants.
Petter Dass was pastor in Alstahaug from 1689 until his death in 1707 . From 1805 to 1828 Alstahaug was the first bishopric in Northern Norway.
