Petter Dass

Petter Dass (* about 1646 in Helgeland ; † 17th August 1707 in Alstahaug ) was a Norwegian theologian , poet and writer of hymns .

Life

That was the son of the Scottish merchant Peter Dundas, who emigrated to Northern Norway , and Maren Falchs, daughter of the bailiff of Helgeland , Peter Jakobsson Falck. He grew up in Nærøy in Trøndelag and went to school in Bergen . After studying theology in Copenhagen , he worked there from 1665 to 1667 as a private tutor . In 1669 he was promoted to chaplain of Nesna , in 1689 he became pastor of the parish of Alstahaug . In addition to his pastoral work, he was also active in coastal trade. Especially during his time as a chaplain, he suffered great economic hardship, like the entire northern Norwegian population.

Create

Petter Dass is one of Norway's most important poets of the 17th century . In the style of Martin Luther's little catechism , Dass wrote hymns and sang the life of his Norwegian homeland in popular ways. In the 16 stanzas of his psalm adaptation Herre Gud, ditt dyre navn og ære , a praise of creation , he leads z. B. among other things, all fish living off the coast of Helgeland by name. His poems were often means to the end of his pastoral work.

The baroque poetry is related Nordland Trompet (The Trumpet of the North country), a detailed and interesting cultural and historical description of the hard and simple life of Norwegian farmers and fishermen.
