Trøndelag (German Tröndelag ) is a part of the country in central Norway and has been a province ( Fylke ) since January 1, 2018 . It has an area of 44,674 km². There are 38 municipalities in Trøndelag with a total of 468,702 people (as of February 27, 2020).

The name is derived from the Trønder tribe. Their distribution area also included Øst-Trøndelag (Ost-Trondelag) in what is now the Swedish provinces of Jämtland , Härjedalen and Älvdalen . The ending "-lag" stands for "area of common law", the beginnings probably date back to the year 700.

A resident of Trøndelag is called trønder . The Norwegian dialect Trøndersk , which is spoken in Trøndelag, is characterized by the lack of end vowels .

The largest city and capital of Trøndelag is Trondheim . This city was the first capital of Norway.

history

Typical Trönder house in the region

Trøndelag has been inhabited for thousands of years, as evidenced by rock carvings .

Trøndelag was a kingdom in the early Viking Age . Since Hákon Grjótgarðsson Trøndelag has been ruled by the Count ( Jarl ) of Lade . Ark is near what is now Trondheim. The powerful Counts of Lade, Ladejarls , played an important role in Norwegian politics until 1030 . During this time the Norwegians were converted to Christianity by St. Olav after the battle in the year 1030 just mentioned .

Between the Peace of Roskilde (1658) and the Peace of Copenhagen (1660), the Norwegian provinces Sør-Trøndelag and Nord-Trøndelag , which had emerged from Trøndelag, belonged temporarily to Sweden.

On April 27, 2016, the two district parliaments of Nord-Trøndelag and Sør-Trøndelag spoke out in favor of merging the two provinces. In the provincial assembly ( Fylkesting ) of Sør-Trøndelag 41 members voted for and 2 against the association, and in the Fylkesting of Nord-Trøndelag 21 voted for and 14 against. The Storting unanimously approved the planned association on June 8, 2016, which came into force on January 1, 2018.

Fylkesting

The Fylkesting was constituted on October 18, 2017 from the MPs from Nord- and Sør-Trøndelag. The 78 mandates were reduced to 59 with the next election in September 2019. The chairman ( fylkesordfører ) was Tore O. Sandvik (Ap).
