Meldal is a place and a former municipality (municipality) in Trøndelag, Central Norway . As part of the local government reform in Norway , Meldal, Agdenes , Orkdal and the main part of Snillfjord were merged to form the new Orkland municipality on January 1, 2020 .

The municipality comprised the central part of the Orkdalen , the valley of the Orkla river , and some side valleys. 3905 inhabitants lived on an area of ​​633 km² (as of January 1, 2019). The municipality number was 5023. The administrative seat was the eponymous place Meldal; other settlements were Løkken Verk , Storås and Å. Å shares with three other places with the same name the claim to have the shortest place name in the country.

From 1654 to 1987, copper ore and pyrite were mined in Løkken Verk. In 1908, the Thamshavnbanen , Norway's first electric railway, was built to transport it to the coast .
