The Orkla is a 179 km long river in Innlandet and Trøndelag in Norway . It forms the outflow of a lake, Orkelsjø near Oppdal , flows through the municipalities (not necessarily through the localities, the place Tynset on Glomma ) Tynset , Rennebu and Orkland , before it flows into Orkdalsfjord at Orkanger , a side fjord of Trondheimsfjord .
The estuary was a natural delta with extensive wetlands and a rich bird life until the 1970s . Most of the delta is now filled with gravel and built with industrial plants. West of the river mouth, a small remainder of the wetland has survived to this day.
The river is regulated by five power plants that were built between 1978–1985.
The Orkla is a river for salmon fishing . Salmon are found on the lower 88 kilometers of the river.
