Tynset is a municipality in the Norwegian countryside of Østerdalen . It has the function of a middle center. The towns of Kvikne , Fåset and Savalen belong to it .
The municipality borders in the north on Rennebu municipality , in the northeast on Os , in the east on Tolga, in the south on Alvdal and in the west on Folldal .
The origin of the city lies at the confluence of the Tunna tributary into the Glomma . The original name Tønset means "settlement on the Tunna".
Tynset has a train station on the Rørosbanen , a branch line between Hamar and Storlien, which runs almost parallel to the main line Oslo – Trondheim .
In addition to a school center with various secondary levels, Tynset has a hospital and a number of commercial operations. The place is an important shopping center in the region.

The writer Wolfgang Hildesheimer published a novel in 1965 called Tynset . Just as the narrator of the novel knew Hildesheim Tynset but only from the course book of Norges Statsbaner (NSB).
