Gert Hermod Nygårdshaug (born March 22, 1946 in Tynset ) is a Norwegian writer. He has published novels , volumes of poetry , children's books and short stories and is internationally known, especially for his crime novels about the restaurateur and amateur detective Fredric Drum.

Life and work

Gert Nygårdshaug, farmer's son from a rural region in southeastern Norway, first learned the carpenter's trade , which he also practiced when he got involved in writing from 1966. Nygårdshaug first started with volumes of poetry. From 1980 he got serious about his goal of being a freelance writer and has published a new book every year since then. The environmental crime thriller Mengele Zoo (1989) won the 2007 audience vote at the Lillehammer Literature Festival for the “best Norwegian book of all time”. In 1996 he received the prestigious Norwegian literary prize Cappelenprisen . In 2019 Mengele Zoo was published in German.

Nygårdshaug's books contain background knowledge that the author has acquired through travel and research. South America issues in particular are included. Ancient civilizations , archeology , fishing , gourmet gastronomy and wine lovers are subjects of his novels.

In 2004, the South African film production company Lithium Entertainment acquired the filming option rights to four of Nygårdshaug's novels: Mengele Zoo , Himmelblomsttreets muligheter , Prost Gotvins geometri and Afrodites basseng .

Nygårdshaug lives in Lier . Four of his novels have so far been published in German. His books are also popular in Denmark and Poland.
