Mengele Zoo is a novel by the Norwegian author Gert Nygårdshaug from 1989. The German-language edition of the eco-thriller was published in 2019 by Vida Verde Verlag in a translation by Babette Hoßfeld. Mengele Zoo is the first part of the "Mino series", which comprises a total of five parts.

action

Mino Aquiles Portoguesa grew up in a small village in the rainforest of Latin America . His father provides the family with catching rare butterflies. Capitalism is getting closer, nature and indigenous people are being exploited. One day Minos village is attacked by the henchmen of an oil company and his family is massacred. He escapes into the jungle and is taken in by the traveling magician Isidoro, whom he accompanies on a journey through South America. But hatred and thoughts of revenge don't leave Mino in peace. Together with three friends, he founds the Mariposa Group, a terrorist organization with which he wants to get people to rethink and try to save nature.

Nygårdshaug's eco-thriller deals with topics such as environmental protection , the North-South conflict and imperialism . Although the novel describes the world through the eyes of one of the most wanted terrorists, it is easy for the reader to take Mino's point of view. Mino also plays an important role in the subsequent novels , Himmelblomsttreets muligheter and Afrodites basseng , which have not yet been translated into German .

Filming and translation

In May 2008 it became known that Nils Gaup was planning a film adaptation of the novel. A Hollywood film production company had initially obtained the rights to the novel, but they returned to Norway for financial reasons.

The book has been translated into French and Czech. An English translation has started but has not yet been completed.

Awards

Mengele Zoo received the Audience Award for “Best Norwegian Book of All Time” at the Lillehammer Literature Festival and has sold over 400,000 times since its publication.
