geography
Forest
There are around 165 km² of forest in the municipality. The largest part is private forest of many owners. 140 km² are commercial forest. A little less than half consists of old forest. 35% are high quality. 90% are fir / spruce, 4% pine and 6% deciduous forest.
geology
At the time of the Cambrian , the sea reached this region. One finds marine debris. In the Ordovician , the land gradually rose and the Mjøsa rift was formed. During the Silurian , sand and clay were deposited and turned into slate . Later the land was heavily pressed and folded. Where the Hunnselva River flows today, a rupture occurred in Permian , the Hunnselv Fault. The land sank to the east and tilted towards the west. The western part remained unmoved and is therefore higher today. There is also the mountain Lauvhøgda. To the west of the Hunnselv are granite and gneiss , acidic and nutrient-poor soil. In the eastern part of the municipality, the mountains were scraped off diagonally by the ice masses during the Ice Age. There are therefore younger rocks from the Ordovician and the Silurian. Limestone comes from the Ordovician, the dark (clay slate) with lime lenses and clay slate with sand. Sandstone, limestone and slate of various types come from the Silurian. During the Quaternary , the ice masses deposited large amounts of material as ground moraine from the north . Over 80% of the community area is covered by it. They form the main location for the forests west of the Hunnselv. The soil to the east is now also fertile.
climate
The climate is very different within the municipality. At the bottom of the valley, temperatures as low as −40 ° C can be reached in winter. In the higher elevations the climate is milder and the winter temperatures are 10 ° higher. The amount of precipitation is 730 mm / year.
history
Vestre Toten was divided into three parts on January 1, 1908. Eina and Kolbu were singled out and become their own communities. On January 1, 1964, Eina was incorporated again and the Einasee, which previously belonged to the municipality of Brandbu, slammed Vestre Toten. In 2000, due to a referendum, Kolbu was struck dead on Østre.
economy
The municipality's economy is determined by industry and agriculture. The landscape is characterized by agriculture and forestry, which is interrupted by small inland and forest lakes. The forest extends over 165 km², of which 140 km² is commercial forest with 1,300,000 m³ of standing wood. 103 km² of it is private forest. In the western part of the municipality, slow-growing conifers with narrow annual rings are preferred, in the east the fast-growing varieties are preferred. 90% are fir or spruce , 4% pine and 6% deciduous trees . A little less than half is old forest. The new plantings are 45,000 m³. In the west the forest stands on moraine deposits .
